External Entities WordPress storage
Note that extensive parts of this module was generating via AI coding agents under human supervision.
External Entities WordPress (xnttwp) provides a WordPress-aware storage client for the External Entities module.
It allows Drupal to expose and interact with content stored in a WordPress database as Drupal external entities, without importing or duplicating the data.
Built on top of the SQL storage client provided by External Entities, the module automatically generates the SQL queries required to access standard WordPress data structures while hiding most of the underlying database complexity from site builders.
Features
External Entities WordPress provides:
- A dedicated WordPress storage client for External Entities.
- Automatic handling of the WordPress database table prefix.
- Detection of the WordPress database schema and version information.
-
Support for standard WordPress content, including:
- posts, pages and custom post types;
- users;
- comments;
- terms and taxonomies.
- Support for WordPress post metadata and taxonomy relationships.
- Automatic generation of list, count and read queries.
- Optional support for create, update and delete operations.
- Configuration options for WordPress-specific behaviors.
- Initial support for WordPress Multisite database structures.
- An extensible event-based architecture allowing other Drupal modules to alter generated queries and preprocess or postprocess WordPress data.
Plugin support and extensibility
WordPress plugins often extend the standard database schema with additional metadata, custom tables or application-specific behaviors.
External Entities WordPress is designed to remain generic while allowing companion Drupal modules to support these extensions.
Modules can alter the generated SQL queries and participate in data processing through the events exposed by `xnttwp`. This makes it possible, for example, to provide dedicated integration modules for WooCommerce or other WordPress plugins without adding plugin-specific logic to the core `xnttwp` module.
Typical use cases
External Entities WordPress can be useful for:
- exposing content from an existing WordPress site inside Drupal;
- progressively migrating a WordPress website to Drupal;
- building Drupal applications that need live access to a WordPress database;
- sharing content between Drupal and WordPress without duplicating it;
- providing Drupal views, fields and other External Entities features on top of WordPress data.
The module is intended to provide a reusable bridge between the WordPress data model and Drupal's External Entities ecosystem while keeping the original WordPress database as the source of truth.
