Configure which text formats are available for taxonomy term descriptions on each vocabulary, giving site builders precise control while preserving Drupal's text-format permissions.
Features
Taxonomy term descriptions use Drupal's formatted text system, but Drupal does not provide a standard user interface for configuring the allowed formats of this base field separately for each vocabulary. Taxonomy Description Format adds that missing configuration.
- Adds an Allowed text formats for the description field to the vocabulary edit form.
- Places the configuration directly below the vocabulary's Description field.
- Lets site builders select one or more text formats for each vocabulary.
- Limits the taxonomy term description widget to the formats selected for its vocabulary.
- Respects Drupal's text-format permissions and only exposes formats available to the current user.
- Validates submitted format IDs before saving them.
- Stores the configuration as third-party settings on the vocabulary, so it is included in configuration synchronization.
- Provides appropriate cache metadata for vocabulary and text-format configuration changes.
Use this module when different vocabularies need different editing policies. For example, a public-facing vocabulary may allow only a restricted format, while an editorial vocabulary may allow a richer format for trusted users.
Post-Installation
After enabling the module:
- Go to Structure > Taxonomy.
- Edit the vocabulary whose term descriptions you want to configure.
- Under Allowed text formats for the description, select the formats that should be available for terms in that vocabulary.
- Save the vocabulary.
When one or more formats are selected, the taxonomy term form shows only those formats, subject to the current user's Drupal permissions. If no formats are selected, the module does not apply a vocabulary-specific restriction and Drupal allows all text formats available to the current user.
The module does not create a new content type, field, entity, or administration page. Existing taxonomy vocabulary and taxonomy term forms are extended using Drupal's Form API.
Additional Requirements
This module has no third-party dependencies. It requires the following Drupal core modules:
- Taxonomy
- Filter
It is compatible with Drupal core ^10 || ^11.
Recommended modules/libraries
No additional modules or libraries are required or recommended. Configure the text formats and their permissions using Drupal core's text format administration.
Supporting this Module
Taxonomy Description Format is maintained as a community Drupal project. Contributions are welcome through the project's issue queue, including bug reports, documentation improvements, testing, and patches.
Community Documentation
For general information about Drupal taxonomy, text formats, permissions, and configuration synchronization, see the relevant documentation on Drupal.org.
Additional documentation, examples, and demonstrations can be contributed by the Drupal community through the project's documentation and issue queue.
Configuration Synchronization
Selected formats are stored as third-party settings on the vocabulary configuration object. A synchronized vocabulary may contain configuration similar to:
third_party_settings: taxonomy_description_format: formats: - basic_html - restricted_html
The values in the formats sequence are text format machine names.
