SMTP Senpai sends the email of your Drupal site (password resets, notifications, contact forms, orders) through SMTP Senpai by MailSenpai, an email API and SMTP relay hosted in the European Union. Email goes out with an HTTPS request, so it also works where the hosting provider blocks outgoing SMTP ports.
You need an SMTP Senpai account. See the service page for the available plans.
Features
- A Mail plugin that you can set as the default mail system with one checkbox. The previous mail system is restored when you turn it off or uninstall the module.
- Plain text and HTML email, Cc, Bcc, Reply-To and attachments.
- A test email that shows the exact answer of the API when something is wrong.
- A check of the sender domain: SPF, DKIM, DMARC and MX explained in plain words, with what to do.
- The status of the account and the volume of the month, on the module page.
- Errors explained in plain words, with the page where to fix them.
- The API key can live in
settings.phpor in the Key module, out of the database. It is never shown again after saving. - An optional fallback to the PHP mailer of Drupal core, off by default and never used for addresses on your suppression list.
- Deliveries are written to the Drupal log, with a privacy mode that masks recipient addresses.
- No tracking, no external scripts or fonts, no paid features inside the module. Nothing is sent to the service until an API key is saved.
Post-Installation
Enabling the module does not change how your site sends email. Go to Administration > Configuration > System > SMTP Senpai, paste your API key, choose the sender and tick "Send all the emails of this site through SMTP Senpai". Then open the tab "Test and account status" and send a test email. The sender address must be on a domain verified in your SMTP Senpai account.
The permission "Administer SMTP Senpai" controls access to these pages.
Additional Requirements
No modules outside of Drupal core. Drupal 10.3 or later, or Drupal 11. An SMTP Senpai account and outgoing HTTPS connections to app.mailsenpai.com.
Recommended modules/libraries
- Key, to read the API key from a key managed by that module. Optional.
Similar projects
Drupal has several modules that deliver email through an external service, both generic SMTP modules and modules made for one delivery service. SMTP Senpai is the module for the SMTP Senpai service. What sets it apart: it sends over the HTTPS API, so it does not need open SMTP ports; it checks the DNS records of the sender domain and explains them in plain words inside Drupal; it shows the account status and the monthly volume; it reports the exact answer of the API with the steps to fix the problem. If you only need a generic SMTP connection, the Symfony Mailer support in Drupal core or a generic SMTP module is enough: the README shows the settings for the SMTP Senpai relay.
Good to know: through the API every recipient (To, Cc and Bcc) receives an individual copy, so Cc addresses are not shown to the other recipients.
Supporting this Module
The module is free and maintained by MailSenpai. SMTP Senpai is made by MailSenpai, the EU email marketing platform (newsletters, automations, AI assistant): en.mailsenpai.com. Please report bugs and ideas in the issue queue.
