The developer gets Drupal, the editor gets a WordPress-style admin. Press Admin UI gives editors who know wp-admin the same menu, the same Dashboard and the same Posts and Pages, so a team moving to Drupal has less to learn. Drupal stays the engine underneath: nothing is removed, only arranged and named the way those editors expect.

Pair it with the Press Admin theme for the WordPress look. The module also works under Claro.

The admin menu, in WordPress's order and wording

  • Dashboard, Posts, Media, Pages, Comments, Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, Settings.
  • Posts: All Posts, Add New Post, Categories, Tags. Pages: All Pages, Add New Page. Each opens the content list filtered to that content type, titled "Posts" or "Pages" with an Add New button.
  • Appearance: Themes, Menus, Widgets. Plugins: Installed, Uninstall. Users: All Users, Add New User, Profile, Roles, Permissions. Settings: General, Writing, Discussion, Media and Permalinks first, then Drupal's own settings.
  • Tools holds everything WordPress has no place for: Drupal's Structure pages, the full content list, Site Health, Reports and Help. Menus from other modules stay at the top level after Settings, as WordPress plugins' menus do.

Dashboard

At /admin/dashboard, where editors land after logging in:

  • At a Glance: published Posts, Pages and Comments, and the Drupal version and site theme.
  • Activity: recently published posts and recent comments.
  • Quick Draft: a title and some text, saved as a draft post, with the user's recent drafts below.
  • Site Health Status: a summary of Drupal's status report, for site administrators.
  • Screen Options shows and hides boxes; boxes move by dragging or with up and down buttons. Each user's layout is saved.

Posts and Pages

  • Set up on install. If the site already has a matching content type (Article for Posts, Basic page for Pages), it is used as is. Otherwise the module creates it: a Post has Categories, Tags and a Featured image; a Page can sit under a parent page.
  • The Posts list has status links (All | Published | Drafts | Trash, with counts) and rows that read Edit | Quick Edit | Trash | View.
  • Quick Edit changes the title, slug, date, status, categories and tags right in the list.
  • The Edit screen reads Add New Post or Edit Post, with Preview Changes, "Publish immediately · Edit" for scheduling, Visual | Text tabs on the editor, and a browser backup that offers "Restore the backup" if the page was left without saving.

And the rest of the WordPress habits

  • Move to Trash with one click, then "1 post moved to the Trash. Undo". Trashed content is deleted for good after 30 days.
  • Permalinks settings: Plain, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name or a custom structure, plus category and tag bases. Pages sit under their parent page, like /about/team.
  • Comments on posts, held for approval and moderated from the Comments screen.
  • Featured image picked from the Media Library.
  • An admin bar on the site for editors: + New, Edit Post and Howdy, name.
  • WordPress addresses redirect: /wp-admin, /wp-login.php, edit.php, post-new.php and the other common screens go to their Drupal pages.
  • Optional roles: Contributor (writes posts, submits them for review), Author (publishes their own posts) and Editor (manages all posts, pages, categories and tags).

Optional modules

Some features use other modules. Each one is set up when it is installed, before or after Press Admin UI, and settings the site already has are left alone.

  • Trash for Move to Trash and Undo. Without it, deleting stays permanent.
  • Scheduler for scheduled publishing.
  • Pathauto for Permalinks.
  • Comment, Media and Media Library from Drupal core, for comments and the Featured image picker.

Installation

  1. composer require drupal/press_admin_ui, then install it at Extend.
  2. Optionally add the optional modules above, and the Press Admin theme as the administration theme.
  3. Settings are at Settings → Content authoring → Press Admin UI (Drupal's Configuration menu, renamed): which content types are Posts and Pages, the post-login Dashboard, the site admin bar, the WordPress redirects and the optional roles.

Uninstalling keeps the Post and Page content types and their content.

Requirements

  • Drupal 10.3 or 11.
  • Core modules Node, Taxonomy, Image, Text, Field, File and Views.
  • Trash needs Drupal 11.3.3 or later.
  • On nginx, the /wp-admin/*.php and /wp-login.php redirects need a short server rule, given in the README. Apache needs nothing.

For developers

  • hook_press_admin_ui_dashboard_boxes_alter() adds or changes Dashboard boxes.
  • Kernel tests cover the menu, the Dashboard, the content types, trash, permalinks, redirects and roles.

Supporting this module

Bug reports, feature requests and patches are welcome in the issue queue. If your editors moved from WordPress to Drupal with Press Admin UI, we would like to hear how it went.

More Modules

  • Press Admin: The companion administration theme: a dark left menu, a top admin bar and an Edit screen with a Publish box, in the WordPress style.
  • Block List: Lists every block on the site by the module that provides it, core included, with a plain-English description of each block and every place it is used.
  • Config Doctor: Finds configuration nothing uses and dependency problems that break imports, and lets configuration imports fix themselves by policy instead of failing.
  • Drupal Cleanup: Finds and safely removes the data a site leaves behind (orphaned index entries, moderation states, queue items, abandoned batches, old working files), with backups, a hold switch and an audit trail.
  • Module Cleanup: Lists uninstalled or deleted modules with leftover transient data and allows the admin to delete any leftover data. A fix for the "Module 'module_name' has an entry in the system.schema key/value storage" error.
  • NIST for Gov: Reports that check a Drupal site against NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls, starting with API keys, passwords and tokens stored in plain text.
  • Permissions Table: Fixes the permissions table by keeping its header fixed at the top and its horizontal scrollbar fixed at the bottom.
  • Recipe Filter: Adds a "Recipe Type" sidebar menu to the Project Browser Recipes page, the same way Module Filter builds a sidebar for the Modules page.
  • Sentinel: Warns people about danger where they are: FEMA public alerts, National Weather Service alerts and FEMA flood zones, with a warning when a flood alert hits a high-risk flood zone.
  • Uninstall Impact: Shows what uninstalling a module deletes, before you do it.
