Press Admin

View on drupal.org

The developer gets Drupal, the editor gets a WordPress-style admin. Press Admin is an administration theme that gives Drupal's back end the layout editors already know from wp-admin: a dark menu on the left, an admin bar across the top, white boxes on a light grey page, and an Edit screen with a Publish box. Less to learn when a team moves to Drupal, and nothing changes underneath.

Press Admin is a sub-theme of Claro, so every Drupal admin page keeps working; it only changes how they look.

What editors see

  • Top admin bar: the site name (links to the front page), a + New menu with one link per content type the user can create, then Media and User, and Howdy, name with Edit Profile and Log Out. It replaces the Toolbar, or the Navigation module's sidebar and top bar, on admin pages.
  • Left admin menu: built from Drupal's admin menu, with icons. The current section's links show underneath it; other sections open as fly-outs on hover or keyboard focus. Collapse menu folds it to icons, and the choice is remembered.
  • Edit screen: content forms use the familiar Edit Post layout. The title field reads "Add title". A Publish box sits at the top of the right column with status, revision information, Preview, the save button and Delete. Categories, tags and images each get their own box below it. The save button reads Publish, Save Draft or Update, following the Published checkbox.
  • Classic editor look: CKEditor 5 with a light grey toolbar and a plain white writing area.
  • List screens: admin tables look like WordPress list tables. Filters sit in one line above the table, and row actions (Edit | Delete | View) appear as links when you hover a row; on touch screens they always show.
  • Everything else: buttons, form fields, messages, tabs, boxes and the pager in the same palette and sizes.

Phones and tablets

The same breakpoints as WordPress: between 783px and 960px the menu folds to icons, and at 782px and below it becomes a drawer opened from the admin bar.

Works best with Press Admin UI

This theme changes the look. The companion module Press Admin UI changes the behaviour:

  • The admin menu in WordPress's order and wording: Dashboard, Posts, Media, Pages, Comments, Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, Settings.
  • A Dashboard with At a Glance, Activity, Quick Draft and Site Health boxes that each user can rearrange.
  • Post and Page content types, Quick Edit on the Posts list, Move to Trash with Undo, Permalinks settings, scheduling from the Publish box, and an admin bar on the site itself.

Each works without the other.

Installation

  1. Install the theme: composer require drupal/press_admin
  2. Go to Appearance, install Press Admin, and choose it as the Administration theme at the bottom of the page.

With Drush: drush theme:enable press_admin && drush config:set system.theme admin press_admin

Requirements

  • Drupal 10.3 or 11.
  • Claro, which is part of Drupal core.

Good to know

  • Claro is marked internal and its markup can change between Drupal minor releases. Press Admin is tested against current Drupal releases; please report anything that looks wrong after a core update.
  • No WordPress code or assets are included; the icons are drawn for this theme. WordPress is a trademark of the WordPress Foundation, and this project is not affiliated with it.

Supporting this theme

Bug reports, feature requests and patches are welcome in the issue queue. If your editors moved from WordPress to Drupal with Press Admin, we would like to hear how it went.

More Modules

  • Press Admin UI: The companion module: WordPress's admin menu, a Dashboard, Posts and Pages, Quick Edit, Trash with Undo and Permalinks.
  • Block List: Lists every block on the site by the module that provides it, core included, with a plain-English description of each block and every place it is used.
  • Config Doctor: Finds configuration nothing uses and dependency problems that break imports, and lets configuration imports fix themselves by policy instead of failing.
  • Drupal Cleanup: Finds and safely removes the data a site leaves behind (orphaned index entries, moderation states, queue items, abandoned batches, old working files), with backups, a hold switch and an audit trail.
  • Module Cleanup: Lists uninstalled or deleted modules with leftover transient data and allows the admin to delete any leftover data. A fix for the "Module 'module_name' has an entry in the system.schema key/value storage" error.
  • NIST for Gov: Reports that check a Drupal site against NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls, starting with API keys, passwords and tokens stored in plain text.
  • Permissions Table: Fixes the permissions table by keeping its header fixed at the top and its horizontal scrollbar fixed at the bottom.
  • Recipe Filter: Adds a "Recipe Type" sidebar menu to the Project Browser Recipes page, the same way Module Filter builds a sidebar for the Modules page.
  • Sentinel: Warns people about danger where they are: FEMA public alerts, National Weather Service alerts and FEMA flood zones, with a warning when a flood alert hits a high-risk flood zone.
  • Uninstall Impact: Shows what uninstalling a module deletes, before you do it.
