View on drupal.org

Olivero is a clean, accessible, and flexible front-end theme for Drupal. It has a responsive, mobile-first layout, a colorable design, and thirteen regions. Olivero was Drupal core's default front-end theme from Drupal 9.4 through Drupal 11, and is now maintained here as a contributed project.

The theme is named in memory of Rachel Olivero, who died in 2019. Rachel led IT projects at the National Federation of the Blind, and worked to make the communities she was part of more inclusive. Olivero was built with the Drupal Accessibility Team and with the NFB to be an example of what an accessible Drupal theme can be.

Do I need this project?

Yes, if your site uses Olivero and you are upgrading to Drupal 12. Olivero was deprecated and removed from core in Drupal 12. Add this project to your codebase as part of the upgrade and your front end keeps working — the theme's configuration, regions, templates, and theme settings are unchanged from the core version.

Yes, if you are building a new Drupal 12 site and want Olivero. Drupal 12's standard profile no longer installs a front-end theme, so Olivero is now an explicit choice rather than the default.

No, if you are on Drupal 11 or earlier and are happy with the copy of Olivero that ships in core. Nothing is required of you until you upgrade. This project declares Drupal 11 compatibility so it can be added to your composer.json ahead of the upgrade, but on Drupal 11 core's own copy of the theme is the one that is used.

Olivero in Drupal core

Drupal 9.1 (December 2020)
Added to core as a beta experimental theme.
Drupal 9.4 (June 2022)
Marked stable and became the default front-end theme in the standard profile.
Drupal 10 and 11
Remained the default front-end theme.
Drupal 12
Deprecated and removed from core. Development continues in this contributed project. See the deprecation notice for background.

Version history and branches

  • 2.x — the current branch. It continues the theme's full history from Drupal core, grafted onto the original pre-core contrib history, so git log and git blame reach all the way back.
  • 8.x-1.x — the original contrib branch from 2019 and 2020, before Olivero was added to core. Unsupported, kept for history.
