Navigation Extra

Navigation Extra adds configurable features to Drupal core's Navigation sidebar.

Requirements

• Drupal core Navigation module.
• Drupal 10.3 or later.

Optional

• Navigation Extra Tools adds a Tools navigation item for cache clearing, cron, and database updates.
• Devel enables configuration of where Development links appear in the Navigation menu.

Navigation Extra supports Navigation Extra Tools and, when Devel is installed, lets you fine-tune the placement of its Development links.

Note

Navigation Extra supports Drupal core's Navigation module, not the former contributed Navigation module.

Note

There is no upgrade path from Admin Toolbar Content to Navigation Extra. Custom collection hooks need to be updated; see navigation_extra.api.php.

Features

Navigation menu

• Expands the Content navigation menu with more high level menu items for content entities such as Media, Files, Blocks, Taxonomy, Webforms and Users.
• Adds individual Add new links below content types and can hide the core main Create menu.
• Groups navigation items in configurable collections. One collection level is currently supported (But experimentally you can override the menu depth).
• Optionally structures the core Create menu using collections.
• Shows recently updated content below each content type. Items can be global or limited to the current user's content, subject to normal node access.
• Links recent items to the edit form, canonical view, or Layout Builder when it is available.
• Allows blocks to be marked as safe for the Navigation layout so you can place it inside the navigation bar. Not all block can just be dropped in, some will need some css love to display correctly.
• Provides a plugin system and collection API for custom navigation links and further customizing the navigation bar to your liking.

Content view links

• Supports custom content-type Views with the content_ naming convention, including exposed filters.

Versioning

• Shows a configured Drupal/application version and environment indicator next to the site logo.
• Optionally shows available Drupal core and contributed-project update counts when the Update module is enabled.
• Detects environments from the domain, an environment variable, or a request header and applies configurable environment colours.
• Supports Navigation Extra Tools and Devel link repositioning when those modules are enabled.

Local tasks

• Adds a Local Tasks (Edit, Delete, ...) block to Navigation.

People (Users)

• Adds role shortcuts to the user overview through the People plugin.

Recent content

The Content plugin applies one shared configuration to every content type:

• Number of recently updated items.
• Global items or items created by the current user.
• Whether empty recent-content groups are hidden.
• Destination for each item: edit form, canonical view, or Layout Builder.

Version indicator

The Version plugin can obtain an application version from a Git tag, module or profile information, a file, or an environment variable. Its title, tooltip, URL, logo-link behavior, and environment colours are configurable.

Custom collections

Group navigation items by implementing hook_navigation_extra_collections():
