The Group Subscription module sends email notifications to group members when new content or comments have been posted to their groups. It also sends email notifications to all site users, regardless of group membership, when new site-wide news content has been posted to the site.

Administrators can configure the following:

  • Which content type will be used for site-wide news subscriptions
  • For each group type, which group content types will be included in group subscriptions
  • For each group content type, determine if you would like to allow content creators to omit individual nodes of that type from subscriptions
  • For each group type, which group roles you would like to be able to use the option to omit content from subscriptions
  • For each group content type, customize an immediate and/or daily display to be used in emails subscriptions of the corresponding type

There are other modules that perform some of these functions to varying degrees. In many cases you can configure content type notifications to be sent out but end users have no say in the matter. The Group Subscription module hands control over these notifications to the end users.

End users can configure the following:

  • Whether they want to subscribe to site-wide news notifications or not
  • Whether they want to subscribe to group content notifications or not (per group)
  • If they do subscribe to group content notifications, how often do they want to receive the notifications (per group)

Limitations:

This module currently operates on the assumption that a given piece of group content (node) belongs to one and only one group. Enhancements to this module are needed to support situations where a node belongs to multiple groups.
