This module adds a configurable colored bar to your website to visually indicate which environment you're currently working in, such as development, staging, or production. This helps prevent accidental configuration changes on your live site and can optionally display the Git branch or tag. It also offers a sub-module to manage environment-specific settings through a user interface without modifying your settings.php file.

This module will help you know what server environment (production, dev, local, etc) you are working in by adding a configurable color bar to each one of your environments. The Environment Indicator adds a coloured bar on the site informing you which environment you're currently in (Development, Staging, Production, etc.). This is incredibly useful if you have multiple environments for each of your sites, and like me, are prone to forgetting which version of the site you are currently looking at.

This module can help you avoid making configuration changes to your live server by mistake by adding a coloured strip to the side of your site, clearly marking each version of the site.

Lullabot-sponsored project

This module is sponsored by Lullabot, and we keep a special eye on its maintenance. Read the Architecture Decision Record on why we use this module.

If you are running 7.x-2.3 or later, then you can show the GIT branch/tag that your site is running. If you are using Acquia cloud make sure you follow the extra instructions.

How to use it.

Read the documentation on how to configure the Environment Indicator.

You can also watch the video (or the video in Spanish) on how to use the environment indicator. These videos talk about the former project Environmental Indicator (a.k.a envindicator) which has become the 7.x-2.x branch, but the principles are the same.

See how to configure the environment indicator in: Drupal 7 or in Drupal 8.

The Environment Indicator's visibility depends upon the permissions of the viewer on each environment allowing a great deal of customization. The module also comes with an environment switcher to open the page you are currently viewing in another environment with just one click.

Environment Indicator UI

Do you have different variable values for every different environment using settings.php? You can use the Environment Indicator UI sub-module for that. It will provide a UI to set the different values per environment that you can export in your config, without polluting your settings.php.

Complementary Modules

  • Environment Indicator Header — Adds an environment indicator to the HTTP headers, making it visible to external monitoring or debugging tools.

Credit

Environment Indicator is being developed by Tom Kirkpatrick (mrfelton) and e0ipso.

Branches 6.x-1.x, 7.x-1.x have been sponsored by SystemSeed. Branch 7.x-2.x has been partially sponsored by Lullabot.
