Entity Studio provides a visual, drag-and-drop interface for designing Drupal's content model, allowing users to create and relate content types, vocabularies, and other entities on a diagram before applying changes. This tool is designed for site builders to easily plan and visualize their content structure, offering a risk-scored preview of all modifications before they are implemented.
Entity Studio adds a visual, drag-and-drop canvas for designing your site's content model (content types, taxonomy vocabularies, media types, and any other fieldable entity) instead of building it field-by-field through Field UI's forms. Add bundles, add fields, and draw entity-reference relationships directly on a diagram, then preview a risk-scored plan of exactly what will change before anything is written to your site.
Features
- Visual, ERD-style canvas. Every fieldable entity type and bundle on your site appears as a node, grouped and color-coded by entity type, with relationship lines drawn automatically from existing entity reference fields.
- Add and edit on the canvas. Create bundles and fields without leaving the diagram. Machine names auto-populate from the label the same way Field UI's own form does, field types are grouped by category, and you can reuse a field that already exists on the entity type instead of always creating a new one.
- Draw relationships instead of configuring them by hand. Drag a connection between two bundles to create a new entity-reference field, picking the allowed target bundles as you go.
- Direction and cardinality are visible at a glance. Arrows show which bundle owns the reference; a dashed line and a "1" / "*" / "≤N" tag show whether a field holds one value or many.
- Widgets and formatters are assigned from the same plugin managers Field UI itself uses.
- One-click layout. "Organize by relationship" clusters related bundles together automatically instead of leaving every node where it happened to land.
- Nothing touches live configuration until you say so. Edits happen against an in-memory draft that autosaves (so a reload doesn't lose work) and warns you if a second editor already has it open.
- Plan before you apply. "Preview plan" lists every create/update/delete operation your changes require, each flagged Safe, Caution, or Destructive (deleting a field that already has data, for example, is always flagged destructive), so nothing is applied to your site as a surprise.
It's aimed at site builders who are planning or explaining a content model, onboarding someone new to a project, or working out a set of entity-reference relationships that's easier to reason about as a diagram than by clicking through Field UI's forms one field at a time.
Post-Installation
Enable the module, then grant the permissions you need: View content model lets someone open and browse the diagram, while Execute content model plans is a separate, restricted permission. Applying a plan can delete field data, so grant it deliberately and only to trusted roles.
There's no separate setup step or "design mode" to switch into: visit Structure > Entity Studio and the canvas loads your site's actual current bundles and fields immediately.
Additional Requirements
Requires only Drupal core's Field module, with no contrib dependencies. The admin UI is a self-contained, pre-built JavaScript application; there's nothing separate to install or configure for it to run.
Recommended modules/libraries
Field UI (core) stays fully useful alongside this module for fine-grained settings not every widget/formatter exposes generically. Media and Paragraphs both work as ordinary fieldable entity types on the canvas if you have them installed.
Similar projects
The Modeler API / Modeler UI ecosystem covers similar ground (visual and import/export content modeling). Entity Studio deliberately doesn't build on it: it talks to Field UI's own underlying APIs directly, so there's no separate abstraction layer to keep in sync as Drupal core changes.
AI Disclosure.Note that extensive parts of this module, most of the React app and some of the backend was generating via AI coding agents under supervision.
