Contrib Extras

No security coverage Drupal 10–11

This module adds contextual editing links to content managed by other contributed modules, allowing users to edit items like alerts or modals directly from the page where they appear. It acts as a temporary solution until the original modules incorporate this functionality themselves.

Contrib Extras fills gaps in other contributed modules, until those modules ship the feature themselves. The base module only ships shared code; every target module gets its own submodule, enabled on its own. Nothing is patched or overridden: the target modules keep working exactly as before, and when one of them adds the feature, you simply uninstall the matching submodule.

The idea behind it. Many contributed modules are very good and very useful, yet still miss a small detail or two. Contrib Extras completes or improves those details without waiting and without forking anything, and gives each module's maintainers the time to decide which of these improvements they want and to build them their own way. Think of it as a testing ground: new features are tried here on real sites first, and the ones that prove their worth are meant to migrate, sooner or later, into the main modules — at which point the extra retires. It follows the same philosophy as CKEditor Extras, which does this for CKEditor 5.

The first gap it covers: Drupal shows a small pencil icon over blocks, menus and views so that site builders can edit them right where they see them. These are called contextual links. Some popular contributed modules render their content without them: an alert from Sitewide Alert or a pop-up from Modal Page appears on every page, but to change it you have to remember where it lives in the administration menu, find it in a list and come back.

New to Drupal? Think of it this way: when you are logged in, hover over an alert or a pop-up on your site and a pencil appears. Click it to edit that alert, delete it or jump to the list of all of them — no hunting through the admin menus.

Features

The package is split into submodules, so a site only turns on what it needs:

Contrib Extras: Sitewide Alert

  • Adds a contextual pencil to every Sitewide Alert shown on the page, with Edit alert, Delete alert and Manage alerts (the alert list).
  • Works with the module's default AJAX loading and with its server-side rendering option. Alerts that appear later — scheduled, or refreshed in the background — get their pencil too.
  • With the Sitewide Alert Block submodule, the block already has its own pencil. Instead of adding a second one, the alert links join that pencil's menu. When more than one alert is published, the menu only adds Manage alerts, so it does not fill up with one Edit/Delete pair per alert.

Contrib Extras: Modal Page

  • Adds a contextual pencil inside every Modal Page modal, with Edit modal, Delete modal and Manage modals.
  • Works with both of the module's providers: Bootstrap and the Drupal Dialog API (Modal Page 6). With several modals on the same page, each one carries its own pencil.

Common to all submodules

  • The links only appear on front-end pages, for users with the core Use contextual links permission. Visitors get no extra markup or JavaScript.
  • If the pencil would cover a close button (the × of an alert or a dialog), it moves just left of it — or right below it — so it stays in the top-right corner, as Drupal's pencils always are. Pencils from other modules are left alone.
  • All the links on a page are fetched in a single request as soon as the page loads, so the pencil is ready even for alerts that arrive later through AJAX.
  • After saving or deleting, you return to the page you started from, just like with core's own contextual links.

When and why would someone use this module? Use cases include:

  • Editors who manage announcements: fix a typo in a site-wide alert straight from the page where they spotted it.
  • Marketing pop-ups: adjust or remove a promotional modal from the page it appears on.
  • Sites with many alerts or modals: reach the full list in one click from any of them.

Post-Installation

No configuration pages, content types or settings. Enable the base module and the submodules for the modules your site uses:

  1. Contrib Extras: Sitewide Alert — log in, visit any page that shows an alert and hover over it.
  2. Contrib Extras: Modal Page — log in, visit a page where a modal opens and hover over it.

Users need the core Use contextual links permission, plus access to the linked forms (the target module's own permissions decide that).

When a target module ships contextual links itself, uninstall the matching submodule.

Additional Requirements

  • Drupal core ^10.3 || ^11 (developed and tested on Drupal 11.4).
  • The core Contextual Links module.
  • Contrib Extras: Sitewide Alert requires Sitewide Alert (tested with 3.1).
  • Contrib Extras: Modal Page requires Modal Page (tested with 5.1 and 6.0 beta).

No external libraries and no build step.

Similar projects

  • The target modules themselves — Contrib Extras is meant to be temporary for each of them: if Sitewide Alert or Modal Page adds contextual links, prefer their own and uninstall the submodule.
  • Core Contextual Links — Contrib Extras does not replace it: it uses core's own pencil, links and caching, and only adds them where the target module does not.

I also maintain and recommend the following modules. None of them rewrite or override Drupal's core output — they integrate cleanly with the existing system, extend its native capabilities, and work perfectly alongside this module:

  • CKEditor Extras — The same idea for CKEditor 5: everyday editing tools it is missing, such as duplicating a table row or column with its content and styles.
  • CKEditor Advanced Container — Flexbox containers and columns inside CKEditor 5, with widths, gaps, backgrounds, borders and responsive behavior configured from the editor.
  • CKEditor Content Groups — Accordions and horizontal or vertical tabs inside CKEditor 5.
  • Media Reference Override — Per-reference overrides of fields like alt text or title on media reference fields, stored on the referencing entity.
