This module solves one specific problem: calling an AI provider can take tens of seconds, far longer than a normal page request should wait on. Connector Hub AI runs the generation call through Drupal's queue system instead of making your site (or whatever triggered the request) sit there waiting for an answer. When the draft is ready, it tells you through whatever notification channel you already have configured, instead of inventing a new one.
Features
- One capability interface (
TextGeneratorInterface) that any AI provider can implement, built on Connector Hub's existing connector/authentication framework. A provider adapter only has to answer "given this endpoint and this prompt, generate text" - everything else (which key to use, how to call the provider's API, how to log success or failure) is handled by Connector Hub's own infrastructure. - A queued generation job: queue a prompt once, and a cron-driven worker calls the configured AI endpoint and creates the draft, without blocking whatever queued it.
- The result lands as a normal, unpublished node (its own lightweight "AI draft" content type: a title and a body field), not a dedicated review screen you have to learn. Editing and publishing a draft works exactly like editing and publishing any other node.
- A "draft is ready" notification through Connector Hub Notify, so you (or your editorial team) find out as soon as a draft exists, through whichever channel you've already set up (Slack, for example, if you use Connector Hub Slack).
- Two ready-to-use providers, included with this project: OpenAI and Anthropic. Enable whichever one matches the API key you have, or both if you want to pick per use case.
Post-Installation
- Enable this module, plus the provider submodule for whichever AI service you have an API key for (
connector_hub_ai_openaiorconnector_hub_ai_anthropic; both ship inside this project). - Store your provider API key using the Key module, the same way you would for any other Connector Hub integration.
- Create a Connector Endpoint using the OpenAI or Anthropic connector plugin, pointing it at that key.
- Enable and configure Connector Hub Notify (and a module that implements its notifier interface, such as Connector Hub Slack) if you want to be told when a draft is ready, rather than checking the content list yourself.
- This module does not ship an admin form to manually request a draft. Queueing a generation job is done by code (your own, or a bridge module such as Connector Hub AI Slack, which lets a Slack slash command trigger one).
- Drafts appear as unpublished content of the "AI draft" content type. Review them from the normal content listing like anything else awaiting publication.
Additional Requirements
- The Key module, for storing your AI provider's API key outside of exported configuration.
- Drupal core's Filter module (used to decide which text format a generated draft is saved with).
- An account, and an API key, with OpenAI and/or Anthropic. This module makes no outbound calls on its own; a provider submodule and a real key are required for it to do anything.
- Connector Hub and Connector Hub Auth, the core framework this module is built on.
- Connector Hub Notify, for the "draft is ready" notification.
Recommended modules/libraries
Connector Hub Slack, if you'd like to both trigger generation and receive the "draft ready" notice from Slack. Paired with Connector Hub AI Slack, a slash command can start a generation job, and a Slack message links back to the draft once it exists.
Similar projects
Several modules integrate AI providers directly into content editing, for example inline "generate with AI" buttons in a form. Connector Hub AI takes a different approach on purpose: generation happens asynchronously through a queue, the result is reviewable content rather than text inserted into a form, and the AI provider itself is swappable without touching anything outside its own small adapter module. It fits naturally alongside Connector Hub's other domains (payments, Google integrations, Slack) rather than standing alone.

See this project's README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, ROADMAP.md, and API_STABILITY.md for the architecture, the reasoning behind the queue-based design, and what is and isn't covered by this module's stability guarantees once tagged.
The full Connector Hub architecture, including how this module fits alongside the other domains, is documented at connector-hub.porschmann.be.
