Part of the AI ecosystem · 343 projects

This module provides a way to automatically translate content using an AI translation service. When content is not available in a specific language, it will offer a button to translate it using the AI module.

AI Translate adds one-click, AI-powered translations to Drupal's content translation system. It takes over the Translate tab on any translatable entity and sends the content to a configured AI provider, which returns a translation in the target language.

AI Translate was part of the AI module until AI 1.4.0, which removed it from that project. From 1.4.0 onward it lives here as its own project and is installed separately.

Documentation

Setup, configuration, and usage are covered in the module guide.

Features

  • One-click translation. Generate a translation straight from the Translate tab, no copy and paste between an external tool and the edit form.
  • Field-aware extraction. Pulls translatable text from plain and formatted text fields, summaries, link titles, image alt text, and file descriptions, then writes the result back to the right places.
  • Referenced content. Follows entity reference fields and translates the entities they point to, up to a reference depth you set (or unlimited).
  • Per-language control. Choose a different AI model and translation prompt for each target language, or fall back to the site default.
  • Editable prompts. The translation prompt is stored as configuration, so you can tune tone and terminology without touching code.
  • Publishing status. Keep the status of the original entity, or create every new translation as a draft for review.
  • Interface translation. Translate UI strings through the same AI provider.
  • Drush support. Trigger translations from the command line.
  • Framework mode. Hand the Translate tab back to Drupal and use AI Translate as the translation engine behind other tools, such as AI TMGMT.

Installation

  1. Install with Composer: composer require drupal/ai_translate
  2. Enable the module and its dependencies: drush en ai_translate
  3. Then grant the Create AI translation permission to the roles that should translate content, and visit Administration > Configuration > AI >; AI Translate Settings to pick prompts, models, and reference depth.

Which version to install?

For most installations, 1.4.x is the release to use. It supports Tool API (and thus agentic translation) and backwards-compatible with 1.3.x
2.0.x is for the future development and is not necessarily working (consider it pre-alpha stability)

Which provider does it use?

AI Translate calls a provider that supports the translation operation. If you do not run a dedicated translation provider, the bundled Chat proxy to LLM provider lets any configured chat model act as the translator, so an existing chat provider is enough to get started.

Requirements

  • AI (Artificial Intelligence) with a provider set for the translation operation, or a chat provider used through the bundled Chat proxy to LLM.
  • Drupal core Content Translation, with the entity types and languages you want to translate already enabled.
