AI Media

AI Media lets editors generate media with AI right from the Media Library. Describe what you need, review what the AI makes, then save it to the library and select it, like any upload.

What it can generate

• Images (PNG, JPG, WebP) from a text-to-image model.
• SVGs written by a chat model, then sanitized and kept self-contained.
• Videos (MP4), from a generated image through an image-to-video model.
• Documents in PDF, Word and Markdown (or plain text), written as Markdown by a chat model and converted on your site.

How it works with the Media Library

• Each AI media type gets its own tab in the Media Library, for example "Generate image with AI".
• Type a description and press Generate. Generate again replaces the result in place, and the description stays editable.
• Review the result in core's own "added media" step, with the name and alternative text prefilled from the description, then save and select it.
• Nothing reaches the library until you save. An unsaved result is a temporary file that cron removes.
• Generated media store their files like core's Image, Video file and File sources, so image styles, view modes and formatters keep working.

Generators are plugins

Each kind of media is an AiMediaGenerator plugin that declares what it makes, the AI operations it calls, its options and its file types. A media type picks its generator in its source settings, so a new kind of generated media is a new plugin, not a fork.

Requirements

• Drupal 11 (11.2 or later, developed on 11.4) and PHP 8.4.
• Core Media Library and Image.
• AI (Artificial Intelligence) 1.4 or later, with a provider set up for the operations you use: text to image, image to video, or chat.
• dompdf/dompdf, enshrined/svg-sanitize and league/commonmark, installed by Composer.

Permissions and safety

• The tab needs create access for the media type and the "Generate media with AI" permission, since every generation spends provider credit.
• SVGs are sanitized with remote references removed. Documents have raw HTML and unsafe links stripped before conversion.
